You are not that special.

I know, I know. I hate to break it to all of us, but we’re really not. The fact that that exact sperm and egg made YOU at that specific time is very special indeed. It’s pretty much a miracle. All the events in your parent’s life and in their parent’s life and in their ancestor’s life had to happen exactly as it did for YOU to be here. You (in many senses) are special, but your problems, not so much.

Why are your problems not special? Why are my own problems not special? Well, because, everyone has problems. To believe that one’s own problems deserves more recognition than another’s is bs. Everyone is facing something. Everyone you know is going through something. News alert: No one’s life is perfect as perfect as it may seem.

So what if your problems are not that special and everyone has problems? Why does that matter? Well, I think it matters, because I believe we go through life dwelling on our own problems and in turn, ignoring that of others. Shouldn’t we all be striving to act in a manner that leads to the alleviation of pain and suffering? Not just for us, but for others as well?

When you stay laser-focused on your problems, what does that do? You’re probably stressed out and overwhelmed or acting in a somewhat selfish manner, possibly even creating more suffering and pain as you go on. Whatever you focus on, you get a little bit more of, right? So what if you let go? What if you decided to live your life in service to others (and yourself) by acting in a manner that doesn’t add pain and suffering to your life or anybody else’s? What if you decided to be grateful for your problems and for your life? Why if you decided to see such problems as opportunities instead? Imagine a world where a lot of people were doing this same thing. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Now, you might say, well why me? Why do I have to do this when I don’t see anybody else doing it? Because it’s the right thing to do. And why not you? Who would you suggest? Do you have a list of names you’d like to share?

In all seriousness, I’ve been very intrigued by this approach. For the last several weeks, I’ve been trying to live it. It’s been a shift mentally, a good one. It’s really helped my overall mood. I’ve started small, but I’d like to go bigger. I’ve tried this approach with the people I am closest to (like my boyfriend), but I would like it to include more and more people. I think it’s a wonderful thing. I hope you try it and it does wonders for you.
